How I Work

I’m a big believer in collaboration. This means that I see us both as experts working together towards a common goal of greater happiness, understanding, or healing for you. I will use my skills and training to prompt you with questions, observations, gentle confrontation, and silence during therapy. Over time, this process will help you deepen your understanding about your life and your concerns. This, in turn, will enable you to make more satisfying choices about your life.

Generally speaking, I will not be giving you advice or tell you what to do.  I feel you are the expert on your particular situation. If you are uncertain about a decision, we will spend time exploring that so you that you can gain greater clarity about what you want to do.  I find that frequently giving advice or counsel robs you of the opportunity to tap into your own wisdom about your situation. It also assumes that I know what is best for you.

I may have specialized training that I bring to bear on your healing, but I don’t know if you’d be happier living in a house by the sea or in a mansion in the city. In other words, you are responsible for authoring your own happiness. While taking this responsibility on may feel burdensome at times, I think you will find that the benefits far outweigh the costs in the long run.  I want to help you develop the skills, insights, and confidence you need to weather life’s troubles and problems on your own.

Lastly, I want you to know that I am a big believer in self-care. This means that I view the job of taking care of myself very seriously. This benefits both of us because it enables me to bring my healthiest self into the room to benefit your therapeutic work.  It also means that I can help you learn how to care for your own self. Many of us never really learned how to do this as children and young adults and it is an absolutely essential skill!
